Consists of businessman James Himrod's letters to his nieces, Minnie, Lizzie, Julia, and Anna Himrod, chronicling his 10 years of life in Sacramento, Colusa, and Truckee, Calif. Himrod describes his experiences with the weather and earthquakes, and the differences between East Coast and Calif. morality and religious observance; he also discusses their business and marriage prospects, his nieces' travels to Calif., his engagement to Jennie Cowdrey, and later, news of their family. Many of Himrod's letters from Truckee are written on company stationary from Sierra Nevada Lumber Association and Truckee Lumber Company. Includes a few letters from Jennie to her brother, DeWitt C. Cowdrey of Truckee, Calif., and to Minnie. Also includes a newspaper clipping announcing their marriage, along with the 1850 marriage certificate of Himrod's brother, Oliver and Mary P. Cruttenden, Mary Himrod's will, and obituary clippings for Oliver and Julia. Finally, includes a letter to his brother, William, and his brother-in-law, DeWitt, and a letter from Lizzie to Minnie.
